FDIC-Insured - Backed by the full faith and credit of the U.S. Government
As we celebrate Veterans Day at Southside Bank, we are reminded of the courage and sacrifice of the men and women who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. Their dedication to protecting our nation’s values and freedoms is a testament to their bravery.
We want to share the story of one of our team members, Brynner Nkala, who reflects on his journey from a childhood fascination with soldiers to his service in the U.S. Army. His experience highlights the deeper purpose behind military service, one that extends beyond individual gain to uphold the ideals of freedom, equality, and hope.
Brynner shares: “Society has long had a fascination with heroes, warriors, and soldiers, dating back to ancient myths and legends. As a young boy in Zimbabwe, I would play with my green army men and was captivated by the idea of being a soldier, wielding “cool” weapons and defeating the enemy. As I grew older that childhood fascination faded, and, when I became a US citizen, the desire to contribute to a cause greater than myself by serving my country became more apparent.
I vividly remember standing waist-deep in a swamp after getting hopelessly lost during a failed land navigation exercise in the backwoods of Georgia at Fort Benning. As the sun set, I questioned what had brought me to that moment. I was no longer the little boy playing with toy soldiers; I was a man, standing among many brave men and women who had left their families and the comfort of their homes behind. We were there for a purpose greater than personal comfort or gain.
I glanced over my right shoulder and saw the flag with stars and stripes and was reminded exactly why I was there. That moment reinforced the idea that what we do in such times has a lasting impact. Not only does it secure the rights and freedoms of people here at home, but also inspires hope in parts of the world where belief in democracy, freedom, and equality has been lost.”
We’d like to thank Brynner and all our U.S. Veterans. We recognize your service and are thankful for your sacrifice.
